Baptism

The Point practices believer's baptism, meaning that we hold the Bible to teach that only those who have repented of their sin and placed their faith in Jesus for salvation are to be baptized. This would exclude infant baptism.

We also hold that the mode of baptism that most closely aligns with the teaching and example of Scripture is immersion, whereby the person being baptized is completely submerged under the water.

Believing that God saves children, even at a very early age, The Point desires to steward the discipleship of children well. Before baptism, all children who profess faith in Jesus will meet with a pastor or ministry leader to ensure they have a clear understanding of the gospel and the profession they are making through baptism. Additionally, any children 10 or under will be required to complete discipleship lessons provided by The Point’s Kids Ministry. The aim of this is to provide one more step of discernment when it comes to the child’s readiness to be baptized.

The Point recognizes that a person is not only baptized into Christ but also into His Body, the Church. Therefore, The Point connects baptism with membership in the local church and expects those being baptized to become members of The Point. In the very rare situation that someone might be baptized but not able to join The Point (e.g., a member of the armed forces who is about to move), the expectation in baptism would be that the person is committed to finding and joining a local church as soon as possible.

When a person requests to be baptized, they will meet with a pastor or ministry leader to ensure they have a clear understanding of the gospel and the profession they are making through baptism and they will be asked to complete the Baptism Form. This step is necessary before a person is baptized. Afterwards, a future date for baptism is set.
